Client Requirements

As part of the ongoing safety assurance and maintenance monitoring of the 1.6km long Thames Tunnel on the Docklands Light Rail Network, the client, City Greenwich Lewisham Rail Link plc, required datum plates to be fixed to the tunnel walls at 20m intervals and the infrastructure to be measured.

The data collected was linked with CGL’s own database before full structure clearance analyses were undertaken to identify unoccupied, available tunnel space.

Laser Rail’s Solution

Laser Rail’s new LaserPeT (Laser Profiling Trolley) proved to be an ideal solution for this type of work. Operating at walking speed, LaserPeT measured composite sections, containing all infrastructure measurements for the minimum profile over each one metre section of track and referenced these to the appropriate track chainage. The LaserPeT work was completed in just two engineering hour shifts and the results were downloaded and analysed using Laser Rail’s ClearRoute™ software.

In addition, datum plates were fixed to the tunnel walls at 20m locations at a consistent height above rail head level. The offsets from the rail running edge at each plate were measured with LaserPeT and recorded on the plate.
