Development of the National Gauging Database
In 1999, Railtrack awarded Laser Rail a contract to supply the National Gauging Project with a managed database of all available structure profile data. The National Gauging Database developed out of that project and has been continued beyond the end of the NGP on behalf of Network Rail as a way of managing and storing all records of structure data, measured by several methods and collated from various sources.
The National Gauging Database has been assembled using Laser Rail’s own TrackRoute™ database. TrackRoute™ was developed to be compatible with the original ClearRoute™ Graphical Database, to relate gauging and other types of information to railway network GIS systems:
- Line details, track information and track speeds
- Track Geometry Information
- Structure Information, including new structures and updates of existing structures
- Track Interval (sixfoot)data
- Datum plate records
- 900,000 profiles
- Grouped into 90,000 active surveys and
- 30,000 archived surveys
- Network model consists of 1,500 line records (Engineer's Line References)
- 6,000 tracks
- 100,000 structures comprised of 150,000 structure lines including;
- 6,000 platforms
- 15,000 overbridges
- 20,000 underbridges
- 700 tunnels
- 2,000 viaducts
