Formula Student started in the USA in the late 1970’s, and came to the Europe in 1998 in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. UB Racing was involved in this first competition. The design brief for the car is that for less than $25,000 a prototype car is to be produced, whilst delivering high performance under a standard set of rules. The competition considers engineering design, cost analysis, and presentation followed by dynamic tests of acceleration, manoeuverability and handling, endurance and fuel economy.
Funding for the team is largely through sponsorship, frequently in the form of components. Laser Rail is pleased to be sponsoring the team training and field testing, to be performed at the Bruntingthorpe proving ground. The team believes that winning is as much about driver skills as car performance and this year has an aggressive program for both drivers and cars.
Laser Rail’s involvement with the team provides an opportunity for young engineers to mix with established engineers, and for those same engineers to re-acquaint themselves with developments in an area of activity beyond their day-to-day activities. The company actively supports the training and development of young engineers. In addition to this, Laser Rail participates in the Royal Academy of Engineering “Engineering Education Scheme” which works on an engineering project with local schools.
